Living on the inner harbour.

Until some 800 years ago the Rhine still flowed where Duisburg’s inner harbour later came into existence. The revitalisation of old port and warehouse buildings in combination with the creation of attractive inner-city living space – this was the basic idea behind the reshaping of this historic construction site.

Now, in accordance with the urban planning specifications of Sir Norman Foster’s architecture office in London, a residential area with an attractive canal landscape has been produced. The architects gmp designed two high-quality 5-storey residential buildings, standing in Philosophenweg above a shared underground garage.

The upper storeys were erected using an economical masonry construction method with reinforced concrete roofs. The meandering façade design produces areas of projecting and support-free building, time and again creating the possibility for new and individual living situations. The underground garage is a seamless reinforced concrete construction, in some areas with flat roofs.

The striking, "crowning" top of the building is formed by projecting flying roofs of precast exposed concrete elements which are anchored to the floor slabs by mounting fittings.
